First off, thank you so much everyone for the lovely birthday wishes You guys are too good to me.
Secondly, this was a hell of a birthday surprise.
Yesterday, it was formally announced that Toho Studios would be reviving their OWN Godzilla film, set to be released in 2016, with production starting in 2015. Speculation abounds on the project, but the biggest question seems to be the focus on CGI or traditional Suitmation. The article cites the recent adaptation of the manga Parasyte as an example of the "high quality filmmaking" that Japan is currently capable of, but given the franchise's tradition of practical effects, and perhaps an unwillingness to appear inadequate when compared to the hundreds of millions spent of American SFX, we may be seeing something akin to Shinji Higuchi's Attack on Titan adaptation - a combination of sparse miniatures, green screening, props, CGI, and suits. One can only hope. www.augustragone.blogspot.com/…
This is coming on the heels of the recently announced Godzilla videogame receiving US distribution. The trailer was well-received at the VGA's a few nights ago, even if the host didn't seem particularly interested
Also, let's not forget the new life-sized Godzilla head being sculpted atop a new theater in Shinjuku - giving the impression of a 50-meter tall Godzilla peeking into downtown Tokyo
Between all this, Godzilla 2 coming out in 2018, and Pacific Rim 2 in 2017, it's a good time to be a kaiju fan
