An old piece that I never posted, but I thought that was a crying shame.
Here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia page on T. Rex in popular culture:
"Tyrannosaurus gained widespread public attention on December 30, 1905, when the New York Times hailed T. rex as 'the most formidable fighting animal of which there is any record whatever," the 'king of all kings in the domain of animal life,' 'the absolute warlord of the earth,' and a "royal man-eater of the jungle.' In 1906, Tyrannosaurus was dubbed the ' prize fighter of antiquity' and the 'Last of the Great Reptiles and the King of Them All.'"

What a damn incredible legacy.

It's been long debated as to "scavenger or predator" for arguably the most famous dinosaur in the world. To say that Tyrannosaurus Rex was a strict scavenger and, in the words of some paleontologists, actually incapable of chasing and hunting other dinosaurs is as erroneous as saying humans and dinosaurs lived in the same time period. I could go on for hours on this subject, like how even larger carnivores like Giganotosaurus are considered active hunters in their time, or how the Rex's eye-sockets are positioned for binocular vision, primarily used by hunters, OR how large herbivores that were a primary source of food for the tyrannosaur were certainly not much faster that the predator, and an ambush attack would yield a fine kill.

Oh, and the powerful sense of smell thing? That lets folks claim that only scavengers have such a powerful sense of smell as a Tyrannosaur? Well, the only animals in our modern ecosystem that are complete scavengers are birds like the turkey vulture, who can cover a lot of ground and find the necessary amount of carrion they need. Land-based carnivores can't subsist entirely off of carrion.

*inhales* Okay, that's all from me for now.

The T Rex was definitely a predator. I saw a documentary on it, Their rigid tail acted as a sort of counter balance that sort of bounced up and down as it ran, adding a bounce to their stride and allowing for quicker movement.

That... is when the world... will end.

There's no debate about the hunter/scavenger thing. It's already known that Horner was incredibly biased, and was trying to get attention.

Regardless, this is a smashing piece. Accurate, but stylized. Has that oldschool prehistoric world vibe, while also being up to date.

This is a very powerful image. That it wasn't posted sooner is a crying shame indeed. I love how the orange really sets the high energy mood while contrasting with the natural reptilian greens on the T-Rex's. Overall it has a great sense of presence and atmosphere. It still amazes me how your lines are so crisp and solid. Its also rather refreshing to see you step away from fanart for a bit.

It's not that I don't like society, It's that I've been forced to live out side of it due to the over whelming force of: conservatives, conformists, liberals, republicans, democrats, enviromentalists, terrorists, right wingers, religous zealots, media...

The evidence for Tyrannosaurus being an active hunter is absolutely overwhelming. It's funny that you mentioned how Scavenger Theory promoters say it was too slow to catch anything, because a friend of mine who's a big paleo buff was just telling me the other day about some recent papers on Rex. They were talking about how the current estimates of it's speed are totally inaccurate, because the comparison that is generally used is an elephant, which has a totally different leg structure and musculature. Supposedly a more accurate speed for T-Rex is 30 mph or so, which would have been fast enough to let it chase down most of the herbivores in it's habitat. The funny thing about it is that it means Jurassic Park was actually right about something. :P

If you have the original files on this, you should add the third finger that they discovered last year.

This'd look great as a cover for PT, have you ever considered submitting it?

I've done a cover for PT before, so perhaps I'll give Mike a ring and see what he says :)
