"In Salvatica, there are few uniforms as easily recognizable, or as demanding of respect as the uniform of The Salvatican Royal Guard, and one of it's most distinct features is the helmet. The identity of each Royal Guardsman (or guardswoman, as a few females have joined their ranks in recent times) is kept hidden from the public, and even from members of the nobility by these helmets. This most fundamental aspect of Royal Guard doctrine applies even to Commanders. If ever a guards face should be revealed, it would mean disaster for that individual, and most likely all of their lineage as well. Attaining the rank of Royal Guardsman, Royal Guardsman Commander, or Captain of the guard, is the highest possible position a soldier or noble knight can attain, and comes with the most reward. But it also comes with the most danger. While everyone dreams of being a Royal Guard, those who aren't harbor nothing but a deep, seething hatred for the actual members of this most secret of police. As no one but Monarch is safe from their reach, the hatred is shared by the poorest field hand, and the wealthiest noble alike. Indeed, Royal Guardsmen are some of the only Salvatican authorities to have slain nobles, lords, and knights in the name of Monarch's security. What's most unsettling to Salvatica's upper class in particular is the rumors that many Royal Guardsmen are themselves members of the nobility, lords, and ex-knights who have donned the mask and joined the groups clandestine ranks. Amongst the poor, the royal guard enjoy a mythical sense of fear matched only by the sense of dread surrounding The Black Paw. Like The Black Paw myths, it's believed that anyone unfortunate enough to come across a Royal Guardsman outside of Pesco is soon to meet with death. And this holds true to an extent. Royal Guards don't journey away from Pesco unless it's to investigate a matter of national security, or to conduct a clandestine operation. As successful as they've been, the guard has experienced hardship as well. Originally they were culled from the best soldiers and sages the revolutionary war against Felonia had to offer by nobles and lords, to keep a close watch on the new focal point of their once scattered power, Exeter; King Monarch the 1st, and the first Captain of The Guard; Lady Vixal. But over time these lords and nobles grew more and more disenchanted with Salvatica's Monarchs, their pet project of guards, and even each other, and many of these conspirators would fall to Royal Guardsmen in the interest of national security. By the time it became apparent that The Royal Guard had evolved outside their sphere of direct influence and control, it was too late for the lords and nobles to do anything more than scorn the beast they had created. But no force in Salvatica was spared of The might of Felonia's Tax Federation, and the Felonian nuclear strikes on Salvatica was one of the guards darkest hours. They found themselves left huddling alongside the widowed Queen Matriarch; Parmellia. But due to some foresight on Queen Inisha's part, this alliance would prove to be strong enough to both preserve the position of Monarch, and the existence of The Royal Guards. Another threat wouldn't arise to the guards again until Advisor Noric and his Sage Corps appear in the country. very Royal Guardsman is a sage, and an expert fighter, skilled at both melee and ranged combat. Commanders are promoted from within the organizations ranks, and these individuals are truly Salvatica's most powerful soldiers."
