Aw cute! Even if the 98 film is trash on the Godzilla character at least the animated series was a decent even if they still got character's design and actions wrong. Now who here thinks Legendary Godzilla deserves a mate as well?

You're getting Zilla mixed up with the original. They never were meant to be the same. Toho signed off the rights to Tristar but they kept close tabs on things. The funny part is Toho is partially to blame for Zilla's very existence because they actually approved this design for the '98 film but when it bombed, they went back on that and gave the world Godzilla 2000 to settle the score.

Here's the kicker: Toho actually really likes Junior from the animated series and say he's worthy of the name Godzilla. Why? Here's why. The animated series had everything that made the Toho films so good. Junior could actually fight, tank hits that would send Senior from the film running, had a Rogues Gallery of unique kaiju that called back to Toho's own monsters at times, and had a breath weapon.

My only sad point is that the show was cancelled without a real resolution.

This show needs a reboot or at least a comic series that tells of these Mutations.

Why do we call Zilla "Zilla"? Shouldn't we call him "Godzilla" and the original Japanese monster "Gojira" as it was originally called as per the first ever (I think) Kaiju film? Gojira was only renamed Godzilla for the American release of the original Japanese film and this was something they even said in the 1999 Godzilla Film: "It's Gojira, you moron!" and lets not forget the actual word the traumatized Japanese fishing vessel survivor said: "Gojira... Gojira" sure it wasn't exactly explained but it WAS there. You'd think this would be a somewhat obvious compromise considering that Japan has their own distinct creature, the towering, indominable beast breathing streams of pure nuclear energy known as Gojira, the terror of Tokyo and Japan. Then there's the giant, aquatic, carnivorous, literal fire-breathing mutant known as Godzilla, the  scourge of the big apple and America. They're both unique enough and come with their own names, one japanese in origin and one its american cousin, while they have similarities they are quite different and this deserve their own names and recognition.

to anyone who's read this mammoth of a comment: I recommend you go watch the Original Japanese Subbed Gojira film (it's surprisingly intelligent and philisophical) and then watch Godzilla (1999) again only this time ask yourself this: is Godzilla really the monster in this film or is the humans? Watch carefully and pay special attention to how the film ends. the intended mood the writer's and directors intended may have escaped you.

Anyways, this is a great drawing, it's nice to see Godzilla getting some love (in more ways than one it would seem) and attention. Keep it up, this is some good work.

It's... kinda complicated.

From what I understand, the version of the creature from the 1998 film and associated merchandise is still trademarked as "Godzilla" due to the 1998 film being co-owned by Toho and Tristar. However, Toho has sole ownership of the creature design and created their own version of it named Zilla, with the mandate that all post-2004 versions of the creature - like the one seen in the Rulers of Earth comic - would be called Zilla. While the name change does not retroactively apply, most fans still refer to the 1998 Godzilla as "Zilla" simply to distinguish it from the Japanese Godzilla, and (according to Mr. Frank himself) Toho does not distinguish between Godzilla 1998 and Zilla except by name.

Techniqualy it's based on the univers of the situation .
If it's based on 1998 franchise, with the attack of new york, eggs, .Jr, Tatopoulos, french nuclear tests, it's Godzilla .
If it's based on other japanese franchises/origines post 2004, it's Zilla .
Actualy the name Zilla isn't totally officiel and if it's valide for the great part of peoples the name can evolve with the situation of the media .

Since we are dealing with a fictional creature, it's name is really up to the interpretation of the authors, directors, and screenwriters.

Well, he is officially called Zilla, now. One of the japanese movies has a line that it was a case of mistaken identity. Besides even in the japanese movies Godzilla is used for Gojira in several instances, usually when the UN is involved.

Zilla is really more close to the Rhedosaurus from "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms". Indeed his movie works better as a remake of that movie.

Sound theory, but it all falls in the water considering the reason the 1998 monster is currently called "Zilla" is because Toho bought the rights to the creature's name and likeness, re-named and re-branded the monsters where it's called "Zilla" everywhere, even in Japan. It's one of those "It's canon because the owners of the product says so." Although that doesn't mean you have to call it "Zilla." Truth is many Americans to this day still think of the 1998 film when they hear "Godzilla" to a point many thought the Legendary Godzilla (2014) was a sequel. You're not wrong that we should call the original "Gojira," but we're also not wrong to call it "Godzilla" either.

Off topic- I wanted to say something before, but didn't want to write too much as I write long too. But you got me honestly thinking that the 1998 remake was actually slightly faithful to Godzilla more than I thought. You mention how we should watch the original film, and I wanted to mention how the dub pretty much made the name Godzilla to be the localized name for the rest of the world. It was around here I made a noticeable similarity between the edited dub and the '98 remake. Both movies had a reporter that misheard "Gojira" for "Godzilla" ultimately giving the name to the masses. Raymond Burr played as a reporter from America, who overhears locals talking about Gojira in their native language, but mishears it for Godzilla. In the 1998 film, when the story regarding the monster is stolen from the female protagonist, the reporter on screen calls it Godzilla, even though they show the footage shows the Japanese sailor stating "Gojira" twice, as you even stated. 1998 film still didn't really represent Godzilla in the "Monster Design Department." But hey, you got me to think a potential positive about a movie that everyone in the fan base doesn't acknowledge on.

Toho didn't have to buy the rights to the 1998 monster's name and likeness. According to Ryūhei Kitamura and Shōgo Tomiyama, while Toho co-owns the 1998 movie with Tristar, it has sole ownership of Patrick Tatopoulos' creature design - which they decided to rebrand as "Zilla" for Final Wars.

So they had ownership to the creature since 1998 but they waited until 2004 just to slander the movie by having the monster killed by Godzilla? There has to be more that was going on, I mean this was a movie Toho really wanted to get back at.

According to Tomiyama and Kitamura, Toho didn't even consider doing anything with the Tristar Godzilla until Final Wars aside from firing shots at it in GMK, mostly because of how unpopular the film had been, because they were making movies with their own Godzilla for the Millennium series, and because Tristar had plans to make a sequel to the 1998 film that ultimately didn't come to pass.

When Final Wars was being drafted, Tomiyama and Kitamura had the idea of having the Japanese Godzilla fight the American Godzilla and prove which one was superior. Going over Toho's arrangement with Tristar, they discovered that Toho owned the rights to Patrick Tatopoulos' creature design, which they rebranded as "Zilla" and created a shoddy CGI model for by digitally scanning one of the Trendmaster toys based on the 1998 movie.

Soooo in rough translation, they thought they didn't have the rights, attempted to purchase only to discover they had the rights all along... Hmmm... that explains a lot actually.
